Why Hormone Balance Is the Overlooked Key to Stress, Sleep, and Weight This Holiday Season

The holidays are supposed to feel joyful, yet so many of us end up stressed, exhausted, craving sugar, and feeling completely out of balance. It’s not just the busyness — it’s our hormones reacting to the season. After talking with our experts and the women in our community, I realised these holiday struggles aren’t about willpower at all… they’re hormonal signals our bodies are trying to send us.

As the holiday season rolls around, most of the wellness talk I see focuses on the usual suspects: managing stress, avoiding weight gain, getting more sleep. And every year, I tell myself I’ll finally do all of it,  breathe and walk more, eat less sugar, get to bed on time.

But here’s the thing I’ve started to realise (and maybe you’ve felt it too): we talk a lot about surface-level fixes, and not enough about what’s happening underneath, especially when it comes to our hormones.

Personally, I know the pattern well. As soon as November hits, I start feeling a little more wired, a little less rested, and way more out of sync with food and sleep. During a recent catch-up with Gaby, our Operations Manager, she said something that really stuck with me:

“When the holiday season comes around, I can only think about not repeating the same pattern as every year: stressed, not sleeping well, and suddenly feeling out of balance with food and weight.”

And I thought: same.

That’s when I decided to speak with our amazing team of health experts and dig into what’s really going on this time of year. Why do so many of us feel off during the holidays? And could it have more to do with our hormones than we think?

The Holiday Stress–Hormone Connection (Yes, It’s a Real Thing)

Let’s start with the obvious: the holidays are a lot. Between shopping, planning, family gatherings, emotional triggers, and never-ending to-do lists, it’s no wonder we feel overwhelmed. But what’s often missed is the invisible toll it takes on our hormonal system.

Cortisol — Our “Holiday Chaos” Hormone

When life gets hectic, cortisol (our main stress hormone) starts climbing. And when it stays high (which it often does during the holiday hustle), it can leave you feeling anxious, tired-but-wired, and even contribute to stubborn belly fat.

“When cortisol is constantly elevated, your body stays in ‘fight or flight’ mode. That not only makes you feel wired, it can also trigger a cascade of hormonal imbalances,” explains Sarah, one of our in-house health experts. “This is why so many women feel completely depleted and burnt out by January.”

When I heard that, it made total sense.
We blame our willpower, our routines, or our lack of time — but the truth is, our hormones might be doing more behind the scenes than we ever realised.

What About Hormones and Sleep? (Because, Yep… That Too)

If there’s one thing I hear over and over from the women around me,  friends, teammates, customers, it’s: “I’m so tired, but I can’t sleep.” And I feel that so deeply.

It usually goes something like this: I fall into bed completely exhausted, but then around 3 a.m. — boom — I’m wide awake. Mind racing. Can’t get back to sleep. And then the next day, I’m dragging, reaching for sugar and caffeine, and feeling totally off.

So I asked our team why this happens, especially during the holidays, and they explained that stress plays a huge role. When our stress hormone (cortisol) is too high at night, it basically tells our brain: stay alert!,  even when all we want is sleep. And that messes with melatonin, the hormone that’s supposed to help us wind down.

And as if that wasn’t enough, we’ve also got the wild rollercoaster of hormones like estrogen and progesterone, especially during perimenopause or menopause. Honestly, I don’t know all the science behind it, but I do know the feeling: I’m hot, restless, and my body just won’t settle the way it used to.

Then there’s the seasonal shift. I don’t know about you, but once the days get shorter and darker, I’m all over the place. My energy dips, I feel foggier, and my sleep gets even weirder. It’s like my body’s confused — like it doesn’t know when it’s supposed to be awake or winding down. The artificial light, the late nights, the endless screens — none of it helps.

“We often hear women say they fall asleep exhausted but wake up at 3 a.m. and can’t get back to sleep,” said Dr. Shelly Meyer when we were chatting. “That’s usually cortisol peaking when melatonin should be dominant.”

When she said that, I thought — okay, that’s exactly me.

And turns out, I’m not alone. One of our customers, Lucia, shared this:

“I started taking Hormone Harmony because I was waking up every single night between 2 and 3 a.m. I just couldn’t stay asleep, and it was affecting my mood and energy during the day. Now I fall asleep faster, I feel rested when I wake up, and my whole day feels calmer and more balanced.” — Lucia G.

Honestly, this Hormone Harmony review helped to know I wasn’t the only one going through it.

But I still couldn’t help but wonder… is this all?

Cravings, Weight, and Hormonal Chaos (Because It’s Not Just About Willpower)

Let’s talk about something that hits hard during the holidays: cravings. The sugar, the snacks… I mean, I’m a huge fan of panettone (blame my Italian side of the family), and honestly, I just can’t get enough. It’s like I’m actually waiting for Christmas to come so I can eat as much panettone as I want.

I used to think it was just me “failing” at being disciplined. But now I know — it’s not that simple. There’s a blurry line between treating yourself to a little pleasure and getting totally lost in the carb spiral.

When our hormones are out of whack (and let’s be real, they often are this time of year), our bodies start craving quick energy. That usually means sugar, carbs, and anything that gives us a hit of comfort.

And it’s not just cravings. I’ve noticed that even when I’m not eating that differently, the weight still creeps in — especially around my belly (this started after I turned 44, by the way). Sound familiar?

“That’s often cortisol at play again,” Shelley explained. “When stress is high and hormones are shifting, metabolism can slow down, and our bodies hold onto fat like it’s prepping for winter hibernation. When your system is out of balance, your body naturally wants more sugar and comfort foods. It’s not a lack of willpower — it’s your body asking for support.”

Thank you, Shelly, for that clarity.

It’s not about being weak,  it’s about being human. And maybe what we need isn’t more control… but more compassion (and some extra help!)

Do Hormone-Balancing Supplements Work?

This is the question I hear the most: “Do they actually work?”

And honestly, I used to wonder the same. With so many wellness trends out there, powders, pills, adaptogens, and herbal teas promising to “fix your hormones” overnight, it’s hard to know what’s real and what’s just hype.

But here’s what I’ve learned after working closely with our health experts and reading hundreds (literally hundreds!) of messages from women in our community: sometimes, the body just needs a little help finding its way back to balance. And no, that doesn’t mean a magic cure, but it can mean a real shift.

Over the past year, we’ve seen so many women reaching for natural solutions, especially during transitions like perimenopause, burnout, post-birth control, or simply feeling off. Hormone Harmony keeps coming up in those conversations as a form of extra support, something that gently and consistently helps the body rebalance. Something that works with their body, not against it.

Some women tell us it helps with sleep. Others notice fewer mood swings. And many share that it just makes them feel more… like themselves again.

Here’s a Hormone Harmony review that really stayed with me:

“I’ve had many tests saying I’m not premenopausal or menopausal, but I’ve been moody, bloated, tired, and just not feeling like myself. After taking Hormone Harmony, I feel calmer, more balanced — and my libido is finally back. I don’t feel crazy anymore.” — Marlany N.

When we feel more at home in our bodies, more regulated, more steady, more like ourselves, that’s when everything else starts to shift too:

  • Lucia G. – “I fall asleep much faster in the evening, I feel rested in the morning, and the whole day goes by in a special calm and balanced mood.”
  • Jacqueline S. – “Nearly finished my first bottle and feeling more calm and have increased energy!”
  • Ezra H. – “I noticed within a few days, the bloating went away!”

And I think that’s the most powerful thing

Happy Mammoth’s Expert Tips for Supporting Hormone Balance During the Holidays

1 Recognise the warning signs

Be alert to signs that your hormones may need support: mood swings, persistent fatigue, disrupted sleep, sugar or carb cravings, stubborn weight gain, bloating, or feeling “off” despite trying to behave well.

2 Prioritise lifestyle supports

  • Mindful breaks: Build in periods of rest and recovery amidst holiday busyness.
  • Consistent sleep hygiene: Prioritise going to bed and waking up at similar times, minimise screen‑use before bed, keep the room cool/dark.
  • Light exposure: Get daylight early in the day, limit blue light and bright artificial lighting in the evening.
  • Movement & strength: Gentle resistance work and daily movement help regulate cortisol and metabolism.
  • Balanced nutrition: Include protein, fibre, healthy fats, and coloured veggies to stabilise blood sugar and support hormone production.

3 Use targeted natural support

Lifestyle is foundational, but sometimes our bodies need a bit of extra support. A well‑conceived hormone‑balancing supplement can be a helpful tool.

The Real Holiday Health Hack?

Hormones aren’t just about fertility or menopause, they regulate how we sleep, how we handle stress, how we feel in our bodies, and how we relate to food and energy.

So this holiday season, instead of fighting stress, sugar, and weight gain separately (like we always do), maybe it’s time to look at the common thread: our hormones.

Balancing them doesn’t mean getting it perfect. It doesn’t mean giving up everything you love or becoming a superwoman overnight. It just means supporting your body in a deeper way, so you feel more like you again.

And yes, I’m still going to enjoy my panettone. I look forward to it all year.
But now I understand that it’s not just about indulging in some carbs, it’s about recognising that when I feel completely out of balance, the answer isn’t restriction… it’s support. And I know where to get it.

Enjoy!
After all, isn’t that what this season is really about?
